Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) is an Air Force-funded program designed to promote citizenship and civic participation through extensive leadership activities and opportunities. JROTC cadets are not obligated to join the military, but they do have to wear a uniform weekly. The JROTC curriculum includes STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities, but the main draw of JROTC are the extracurricular teams. JROTC cadets may choose from: Cyber Patriot, Honor Guard, Physical Training, Armed Drill, Unarmed Drill, Academics, and Marksmanship. JROTC teams compete all over South and Central Texas, and frequently compete in National Championships in Ohio, Alabama, and Florida. Cadets are also encouraged to participate in community service. JROTC cadets performed over 4,000 hours of community service in 2019 to organizations like Special Olympics, San Antonio Food Bank, Kindred Veteran’s Nursing Home, and NISD elementary schools.

AS-200, The Science of Flight, is an introductory semester-long course focusing on how aircraft fly, how weather conditions affect flight, and how flight affects human physiology. This course is designed to complement materials taught in math, physics, and Earth sciences. AS-410 is a semester-long course involving survival. It addresses the basic needs for survival, how to meet those basic needs in a variety of environments, and the psychology needed to successfully survive an emergency situation. LE-200 stresses communication skills, including: effective communication, understanding groups and team, personal development, preparing for leadership, and conflict resolution. ROTC Aerospace Science 3
Recommended Grade Level:11-12
Course Description: This course is designed for third-year cadets and requires the approval of the JROTC Instructor Cadre. This course encompasses two main subjects: AS-300 and LE-300. AS-300, Exploring Space, provides the history of astronomy through modern theories about the universe. It continues with a general study of the celestial bodies within our solar system before diving into the benefits of space exploration, the technologies in work for currently planned missions, and the effects of space travel on human physiology. It concludes with basic rocketry, where cadets learn how rockets work and then build and launch rockets. LE-300 provides an essential component of leadership education for today’s high school students. It is designed to prepare students for life after high school in the high-tech, globally-oriented, and diverse workplace of the 21st century. Students become more financially literate by learning skills such as financial planning, budgeting, saving, and investing. They learn the value and pitfalls of credit and develop an understanding of real-life issues such as contracts, leases, warranties, legal notices, bills, apartment selection, and life with roommates. Finally, cadets are given management-level responsibilities within the cadet corps’ operational structure. Cadets plan and execute all corps activities while training and supervising second-year cadets in the performance of their operational responsibilities.
